Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG's) are a subset of Multiplayer Online Games games where large numbers of other players gather in various arenas, and matches can support large populations. Often you are arranged into teams or squads and play against other teams of players. MMOG's have a persistent world that is always online, 24x7. Games Based On Virgin Interactive Entertainment's (VIE's) SubspaceSubspace was a pay to play space shooter game from the 1990s. VIE abandoned Subspace, and over time it became a free public domain sensation. The software has been rewritten over the years and the current downloadable client is known as Continuum. By downloading Continuum you gain access to all games that are based on the Subspace framework. There are many games known as Zones that are available from the Continuum client with many different variations and themes. The limiting factor in Continuum's evolution is that it is restricted to a 2-dimensional playing environment for the most part, but it allows designers to create very imaginative and fun zones using this game architecture, as well as serving as a community building application. Continuum features a very powerful chat system, with public chats, squad chat, team chat, private chats and private messages, which facilitates the building of online relationships.
Trench Wars Game and Online Community:Trench Wars is one of the most popular free massively multi player games available. Due to the flexibility of the Continuum client's chat system, players build relationships, joining squads and private chats in an entire online community. The game features hundreds of different arenas each with it's own theme and style of game play. The main concept of Trench Wars consists of teams of spaceships battling for control of a base, where each player specializes in a certain type of ship with a specific role in the team. In addition, there is a huge diversity of special events encompassing many styles of game play. There are even arenas devoted to such things as acromania, trivia, and pictionary! More advanced players will move on to tournament play in Trench Wars Divisions and then on to Trench Wars Leagues. The diversity of the online community is one of this game's greatest attractions, and many online Trench Wars relationships have turned into real life relationships. The community extends into the game forum, photo gallery, and new MySpace-style social networking web site.
Death Star Battle (DSB):Death Star Battle is another Continuum zone, and its theme is fairly obvious. It has very nice graphics for a 2-dimensional game, and gameplay is quite fun with 2 teams competing for control of the Death Star. This game has the same advanced chat system as Trench Wars, although the number of players is much lower. DSB players can communicate with players in Trench Wars and Extreme Games.
Extreme Games:Extreme Games is a fast-paced "capture the flag" style spaceship game where you are assigned to a team and you fight an opposing team to capture 30 flags in a large arena. This game has the same advanced chat system as Trench Wars, although with fewer players. EG players can communicate with players in Death Star Battle and Trench Wars. Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG'S)Crossfire:Crossfire is a role playing medieval fantasy game that runs on many computing platforms. Gekkeiju Online:This is a modern 3d medieval role playing game with high quality graphics. PlaneShift:This Fantasy game, still under development, is a modern strict role playing game with high quality graphics based on Medieval life. Terra: Battle for the Outlands:This action game with role playing elements began around 1996 and is still popular today. You play the game as a character within a vehicle of your choosing, such as a Tank or attack Helicopter. Urban Dead:Urban Dead is a text adventure RPG where you begin as a human in a zombie infested quarantined city. If you die, you become a zombie, but can be revived back to human status under certain conditions. |
